Ayodhya 84-Kosi Parikrama — Significance, Route & Stay Guide for Pilgrims

The Chaurasi Kosi Parikrama (84-Kosi Parikrama) is one of the oldest and most sacred pilgrimage circuits in the Vaishnavite tradition. Encircling the ancient boundaries of Ayodhya Dham, it spans approximately 240–270 km (84 kos, where 1 kos ≈ 3 km) and is walked over 30–35 days by devout pilgrims.

This is distinct from the shorter Ram Mandir inner parikrama — the 84-Kosi route traces the outer boundary of the sacred cosmological space of Ayodhya.

Spiritual Significance

Ancient scriptures including the Skanda Purana and Ayodhya Mahatmya describe the spiritual merit of completing the 84-Kosi Parikrama:

  • Said to purify the soul of all karmic debt accumulated over many lifetimes
  • The 84 kos symbolically corresponds to the 84 lakh yonis (life forms) in the cycle of rebirth — completing the parikrama is said to free one from this cycle
  • The route passes through dozens of temples, ghats, and sacred groves associated with the Ramayana
  • Traditionally walked barefoot as a sign of complete surrender

The Route: Major Checkpoints

The 84-Kosi Parikrama begins and ends in Ayodhya. Key stops along the route include:

Who Does the 84-Kosi Parikrama?

Traditionally, the parikrama is undertaken by:

  • Elderly pilgrims as a life-completion spiritual act
  • Sadhus and ascetics as part of annual spiritual discipline
  • Families fulfilling a vow (mannat) related to health, childbirth, or other blessings
  • Yatra groups from Braj, Mathura, and Vrindavan who do it as a combined circuit

The parikrama is most commonly done during Panchakroshi Mela (held annually around Kartik Purnima / Deepotsav season) when thousands of pilgrims walk together.

Shorter Alternative: Panch Kosi Parikrama

For those unable to complete the full 84-Kosi circuit, the Panch Kosi Parikrama (~15 km) covers the inner sacred boundary of Ayodhya and can be completed in one day:

  • Starting point: Ram Ghat or Hanuman Garhi
  • Duration: 4–6 hours walking
  • Route: Passes through major temples in the city
  • Best day: Ekadashi, Purnima, or any auspicious tithi

This is a practical option for pilgrims staying 1–2 nights who want to do a complete ritual circuit of the city.
