Ayodhya Festival Calendar 2026-2027: Ram Navami, Diwali Deepotsav, and Key Pilgrimage Dates
Ayodhya's festival calendar is one of the most significant in India. The city transforms during its major festivals — Ram Navami, when the city celebrates Lord Ram's birth, and Diwali, when millions of diyas illuminate the Saryu river and Ram Mandir. This guide covers the key festival dates through 2026-2027, what each festival involves, the real crowd levels you should expect, and how far in advance you need to book accommodation.
Major Festivals in Ayodhya
Ram Navami — April 2-3, 2026
Significance: Ram Navami marks the birth of Lord Ram — the central deity of Ayodhya and the reason the city exists as a pilgrimage site. At the Ram Mandir, this is the most important single day of the year. The temple is the newest and grandest setting for Ram Navami celebrations in India.
What happens: Special morning pujas beginning at 5:00 AM, continuous darshan throughout the day and often into the night, special bhajans and kirtans in the temple complex, and a special aarti ceremony. The Ram Mandir is illuminated and decorated.
Crowd level: 10/10 — This is the single highest-attendance day of the year at Ram Mandir. Expect queues of 4-8 hours for free darshan. App-based booking is strongly recommended.
Booking deadline: Book accommodation at Sri Janaki Mahal Trust at least 3-4 weeks in advance. Rooms in Ayodhya sell out during Ram Navami.
How to prepare:
- Download the Shri Ayodhya Dham app and register for a darshan token at least 1-2 weeks before Ram Navami
- Arrive in Ayodhya by April 1st at the latest
- Plan to be in the darshan queue by 5:00-6:00 AM for the shortest wait
- Carry water, snacks, any required medications, and sun protection
Diwali / Deepotsav — October 20-November 5, 2026 (approximate; confirm exact dates)
Significance: Diwali at Ayodhya is celebrated on a scale unlike anywhere else in India. The city hosts the world's largest diya (lamp) lighting ceremony — the Deepotsav — with over 15 lakh (1.5 million) diyas lit along the Saryu river and across the Ram Mandir complex. The illumination is breathtaking.
What happens: The Ram Mandir and entire riverfront are illuminated with millions of diyas. Evening aarti at the Saryu ghat with thousands of lamps. Ram Leela performances, special pujas, and a festive atmosphere throughout the city. The Deepotsav celebration often runs for several days.
Crowd level: 9/10 — Very high attendance, though spread over multiple days unlike Ram Navami's single concentrated day. Deepotsav evening events draw enormous crowds.
Booking deadline: Book at least 2-3 weeks in advance. Diwali period rooms book up quickly.
How to prepare:
- The Saryu ghat aarti during Deepotsav is the most visually stunning event — plan to attend
- Evening temperatures in October-November are comfortable (20-28°C)
- Accommodation fills from the start of the Deepotsav period
Akshaya Tritiya — May 9, 2026
Significance: Akshaya Tritiya is considered an auspicious day for new beginnings, investments, and spiritual practices. In Ayodhya, it draws large numbers of pilgrims for special darshan and donations.
Crowd level: 7/10 — Significant increase over regular days, but manageable compared to Ram Navami.
Booking deadline: 1-2 weeks in advance.
Hanuman Jayanti — April 6, 2026
Significance: Hanuman is revered as the guardian of Ayodhya, and Hanuman Garhi is one of the city's most important temples. Hanuman Jayanti at the Garhi draws large devotional crowds.
Crowd level: 8/10 — High attendance, especially at Hanuman Garhi.
Special note: Hanuman Jayanti falls just days after Ram Navami (April 2-3). Pilgrims visiting for Ram Navami often extend their stay for Hanuman Jayanti.
Booking deadline: 2-3 weeks in advance (same window as Ram Navami).
Chaitra Navratri — March-April 2026
Significance: The nine-night festival celebrating the divine feminine falls in the spring. Ayodhya's temples are specially decorated, and many pilgrims visit during Navratri.
Crowd level: 6/10 — Moderate increase. Ram Navami (falling within or near Navratri period) is the real peak; the Navratri period itself is elevated but manageable.
Booking deadline: 1-2 weeks in advance.
Devshayani Ekadashi — July 7, 2026
Significance: Devshayani Ekadashi marks the beginning of the four-month Chaturmas period when Lord Vishnu is said to sleep. It is an important pilgrimage day in Ayodhya.
Crowd level: 5-6/10 — Elevated but not extreme.
Dev Prabodhini Ekadashi — November 5, 2026
Significance: Marks the end of the Chaturmas period when Lord Vishnu awakens. Often coincides with the Diwali/Deepotsav period.
Crowd level: 7/10 — Elevated due to proximity to Diwali festival period.

What to Expect During Major Festivals
On Ram Navami at Ram Mandir
Arrival: Most pilgrims arrive the day before (April 1st) or early morning of April 2nd. The temple area begins filling from 3:00-4:00 AM.
Darshan queue: Even with the app-based token system, expect 1-3 hours of waiting. Without the app, queue times can exceed 5-6 hours.
What to bring:
- Water (at least 1 litre per person)
- Packed snacks (the queue has no food vendors)
- Medications
- Sunscreen and head covering (April sun is intense)
- Umbrella if raining
- Comfortable footwear (you will stand in the queue for hours)
What not to bring:
- Large bags (security will not allow them in the queue area)
- Leather items
- Sharp objects
During Diwali / Deepotsav at Ayodhya
Evening events: The main attraction is the Saryu ghat evening aarti during Deepotsav. Arrive at Ram Ki Paidi ghat by 5:00-5:30 PM to find a viewing position.
Temperature: October-November evenings are comfortable (20-25°C). Warm clothing only if sensitive to cold.
Transport: Auto-rickshaws are in high demand during the evening. Walk to the ghat from the trust if possible (500m) to avoid transport stress.
Accommodation proximity: Sri Janaki Mahal Trust is 500m from the Saryu ghat — an enormous advantage during Deepotsav when transport becomes chaotic.
How Far in Advance to Book for Festivals
Ram Navami (April 2-3, 2026)
Ayodhya's accommodation is in very high demand during Ram Navami. The key booking windows:
- Minimum: 3-4 weeks before Ram Navami
- Recommended: 5-6 weeks before (by mid-March)
- During Ram Navami itself: Very few rooms available; most already sold out by April 1st
Sri Janaki Mahal Trust: Call +91 8796427535 as early as possible for Ram Navami bookings. Confirm the booking with an advance payment as required.
Diwali / Deepotsav
Book 2-3 weeks before the festival period. The Deepotsav celebration often extends over 10+ days, so you don't need the exact Diwali night — any day during the celebration period offers the illuminated ghat and festive atmosphere.
Other Festivals
1-2 weeks in advance is typically sufficient for Hanuman Jayanti, Akshaya Tritiya, and Ekadashi festivals. Book early if you have flexibility in your dates.
Special Tips for Festival Visits
Go with a Group, Not Alone
Festival-period Ayodhya is intense. If possible, travel with family or a group. The shared experience of a festival darshan is also significantly more meaningful than doing it alone in a crowd.
Stay the Full Festival Duration
If you are visiting for Ram Navami, arrive by April 1st and stay through April 4th. The days before and after the main festival day have slightly lower crowds while retaining most of the festive atmosphere.
The Trust's Advantage During Festivals
Sri Janaki Mahal Trust's location in Karsewakpuram (800m from Ram Mandir, 500m from the Saryu ghat) is particularly valuable during festivals when transport becomes congested. Walking to the temple during Diwali Deepotsav, when thousands of vehicles are in the area, is far faster and more reliable than waiting for an auto.

Summary
The two most important festival dates in Ayodhya are Ram Navami (April 2-3, 2026) and Diwali / Deepotsav (October-November 2026). Both require advance accommodation booking — 3-4 weeks minimum for Ram Navami, 2-3 weeks for Deepotsav. Crowd levels at Ram Mandir on Ram Navami are the highest of the year (10/10); plan for 1-4 hours of queuing even with app booking. During festivals, staying at Sri Janaki Mahal Trust puts you within walking distance of both the Ram Mandir and Saryu ghat — invaluable when transport is congested.
