Itanagar to Ayodhya: Arunachal Pradesh Pilgrimage Guide 2026

Complete travel guide from Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh to Ayodhya. Trains from Naharlagun station, flight options via Guwahati, journey time, and booking Sri Janaki Mahal Trust for your Ayodhya stay.

Itanagar to Ayodhya: Arunachal Pradesh Pilgrimage Guide 2026

Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, is the easternmost state capital in India — a city of rolling hills and deep valleys nestled in the foothills of the eastern Himalayas. While Arunachal Pradesh is best known for its tribal heritage and Buddhist monasteries, the state also has a significant Hindu pilgrim community. Each year, devotees from Itanagar and across Arunachal Pradesh make the long journey to Ayodhya — the birthplace of Lord Ram — to seek the blessings of Ram Lalla at the newly consecrated Ram Mandir.

Unlike most other Northeast capitals, Itanagar has a distinct advantage: the nearby Naharlagun Railway Station gives it more direct rail access than Kohima or Aizawl. This guide provides all the information Arunachal Pradesh pilgrims need to plan a successful Ayodhya yatra.

Distance and Journey Overview

Distance from Itanagar to Naharlagun Railway Station: Approximately 7–10 km (15–25 minutes by road) Naharlagun to Ayodhya by rail: Approximately 1,650–1,800 km Train journey time (Naharlagun to Ayodhya): 38–48 hours Flight option (via Guwahati to Lucknow): 2–3 hours flying + 4–5 hours total transfer time = 8–11 hours total

Itanagar's proximity to Naharlagun station makes rail travel more practical here than from other Northeast hill capitals. The trade-off is that direct trains from Naharlagun to Ayodhya are limited — most pilgrims either take a train to Guwahati first and then a direct Guwahati–Ayodhya train, or fly from Guwahati.

Step 1: Itanagar to Naharlagun Railway Station

Naharlagun Railway Station (NHLN) is the main railway access point for Itanagar, located approximately 7 km from the state capital.

Getting to Naharlagun

By Auto-Rickshaw / E-Rickshaw: The most common option. Available throughout Itanagar. Journey time: 15–25 minutes. Cost: ₹50–₹150 depending on exact pickup point.

By Shared Taxi: Shared taxis operate between Itanagar and Naharlagun. Cost: ₹30–₹60 per person.

By Private Cab: Book in advance for convenience, especially if departing early morning. Cost: ₹300–₹500.

Since Naharlagun station is so close to Itanagar, this leg of the journey is simple and inexpensive compared to other Northeast capitals.

Step 2: Train Options from Naharlagun

Naharlagun Railway Station (NHLN) has limited but growing rail connectivity. Arunachal Pradesh was connected to the broad-gauge network relatively recently, and the Harmuti–Naharlagun section brought the state into direct rail contact with the rest of India.

Direct / Semi-Direct Train Options

Search on IRCTC: NHLN → AY (Ayodhya Junction) or NHLN → FZD (Faizabad)

Key trains to check:

  • Naharlagun–New Delhi Arunachal Express (15934/15933): This is one of the most important trains for Itanagar–North India travel. It runs via Guwahati, Kamakhya, and heads west through Assam, Bihar, and UP. Check if this train stops at Ayodhya Junction or Faizabad Junction, or if you need to change at Varanasi or Lucknow.

  • Naharlagun–Rajendra Nagar (Patna) Express: Connects Arunachal Pradesh to Bihar. From Patna, you can take a connecting train to Ayodhya.

  • Trains via Guwahati: Many long-distance trains from Northeast India pass through Guwahati. If you board at Naharlagun and travel to Guwahati first (approximately 4–5 hours), you open up a wider range of Guwahati–Ayodhya direct trains.

Route via Guwahati (Recommended)

The recommended approach for most pilgrims:

  1. Naharlagun → Guwahati Kamakhya (GMK) / Guwahati (GHY): 4–5 hours by train
  2. Guwahati → Ayodhya Junction: 28–36 hours on established trains (Avadh Assam Express, North East Express, etc.)
  3. Total rail time: 32–41 hours from Naharlagun to Ayodhya

Trains from Guwahati to Ayodhya to check on IRCTC:

  • Avadh Assam Express (15909/15910) — key Northeast–UP train
  • North East Express (12505/12506)
  • Brahmaputra Mail
  • Guwahati–Lucknow trains

Always verify current train schedules on IRCTC or NTES (National Train Enquiry System) since schedules are updated seasonally.

Class Recommendations

For a 36–42 hour journey from Naharlagun to Ayodhya:

AC 3-Tier (3A): Strongly recommended. Air-conditioned berths, reserved seating, clean linen provided by the railway. This is the standard class for comfortable long-distance pilgrim travel.

AC 2-Tier (2A): Higher comfort. Recommended for elderly pilgrims, those with young children, or anyone prioritising sleep quality on a 2-night journey.

Sleeper Class (SL): Non-AC open berths. Feasible only in winter (October–February). In summer or monsoon, 36+ hours in Sleeper class is very demanding.

General Class: Not practical for this distance. Avoid.

Booking in Advance

  • Ram Navami, Diwali, Navratri: Book 60–90 days ahead. North India-bound trains from the Northeast fill quickly during festival seasons.
  • Regular pilgrimage: Book 30–45 days ahead for AC class.
  • Tatkal quota: 1–2 days before departure, at premium pricing.

Flight Option: Itanagar to Ayodhya

Donyi Polo Airport (HGI), Itanagar's airport (located at Holongi, approximately 15 km from the city), opened in November 2022 and now connects Arunachal Pradesh to the aviation network.

Route Options via Air

Option A: Itanagar → Guwahati → Lucknow → Ayodhya

  1. Holongi (HGI) → Guwahati (LGBI): Approximately 45–60 minutes flight
  2. Guwahati → Lucknow (LKO): Approximately 2.5 hours flight
  3. Lucknow → Ayodhya by road: 130 km, 2.5–3.5 hours by taxi/cab

Option B: Itanagar → Kolkata → Lucknow → Ayodhya Some routes from Holongi connect to Kolkata first. Add 1–2 hours to the total journey time.

Option C: Direct to Ayodhya Airport Maharishi Valmiki International Airport (AYJ) at Ayodhya has growing flight connectivity. Check whether any routing from Holongi connects to AYJ directly — this would eliminate the Lucknow–Ayodhya road leg.

Flight cost estimate (round trip, Itanagar to Lucknow/Ayodhya): ₹7,000–₹20,000 per person depending on season and booking time.

Total journey time by air: 8–12 hours from Itanagar to Ayodhya

Practical Tips for Arunachal Pradesh Pilgrims

Arunachal Inner Line Permit (ILP)

Pilgrims from Arunachal Pradesh travelling within the state do not need a permit. However, note that when you travel outward, you enter Assam (which does not require permits for Indian citizens). For return travel, remember that foreign nationals cannot enter Arunachal Pradesh without an ILP — this is relevant only if travelling with foreign friends or family members.

Acclimatisation

Itanagar sits at approximately 280–350 metres altitude in the foothills. Ayodhya is in the plains at approximately 90–100 metres altitude. The primary adjustment is to the heat — Ayodhya's summer temperatures (April–June) can reach 42–45°C, which is significantly hotter than Itanagar's hill climate. Carry cotton clothes, stay hydrated, and plan morning darshan (cooler) rather than afternoon visits in summer.

Language

Hindi is spoken throughout the journey once you enter Assam and beyond. Arunachali pilgrims who speak Hindi or English will find Ayodhya navigable. The dharmshala staff are accustomed to pilgrims from all parts of India and will assist.

Food in Ayodhya

Near the Ram Mandir area, all food is pure vegetarian. Sri Janaki Mahal Trust serves three full vegetarian meals daily — simple, hygienic North Indian food (dal, sabzi, roti, rice, khichdi). Carry snacks from home for the train journey. Familiar non-vegetarian food is not available near the temple zone.

Safety

Ayodhya is a safe pilgrim city with extensive CCTV and police presence near the temple complex. Normal city-travel precautions apply — keep valuables secure, especially in crowded areas like the Saryu Ghats during festival evenings.

Temples and Highlights in Ayodhya

From Sri Janaki Mahal Trust's location in Karsewakpuram, Arunachal pilgrims can easily access:

Ram Mandir (Ram Janmabhoomi Temple): The main objective — the newly built temple at the birthplace of Lord Ram, consecrated in January 2024. Darshan is open daily; timings vary seasonally. Mangala Aarti at 4:30 AM is a profound experience.

Hanuman Garhi: A 76-step climb to the hilltop temple of Hanuman, considered the guardian of Ayodhya. The view of the city from the top is spectacular. This is typically the first temple visited before Ram Mandir.

Kanak Bhawan: One of Ayodhya's most beautifully decorated temples, housing Ram and Sita. Said to have been gifted by Kaikeyi to Sita as a personal palace. Known for its vibrant gold and jewel-decorated deities.

Saryu Ghat: The sacred river Saryu is integral to Ayodhya's spiritual identity. Bathing in the Saryu is considered purifying. The evening aarti on the ghat — with lamps, bells, and conch shells — is deeply moving.

Nageshwarnath Temple: Ancient Shiva temple established by Kush, the son of Ram. One of the oldest active temples in Ayodhya.

Treta Ke Thakur: Temple marking the site of Ram's Ashwamedha Yagna, with ancient Ram idols said to be from the Treta Yuga era.
